Inventory management for food items

Hi Everyone.  I need some very detailed help with Inventory.  To give you a background, we sell wood-fired pizza among other items, and we are trying to find a way to set up our dough/bases in inventory but not for specific pizzas but in a whole for the entire menu.  Currently we have our pizzas set up with Modifier sets for our bases, sauces, and ingredients.  This way a customer can modify their pizza so it can have the toppings they want.  However the only way to manage inventory is to put in a specific count for each pizza - not just for the bases.  This is a problem because it's not really managing the base count which is mainly what we need.

Maybe and example would help.

If a customer orders 2 pizzas (doesn't matter which ones) the count for our normal bases would reduce by two.  If another customer comes  in and orders 2 pizzas (one Gluten Free) then the count for normal bases reduces by one and the count for Gluten Free bases reduces by 1.

Now this may seem easy but with 26-30 different pizzas available on our menu each night, the only way I can see to set this up would be to have one item "Pizza" with variations for each pizza and then modifier sets for Sauce, Meats and Veges so that our customers are able to customise their pizza.  We would then need a separate item Gluten Free Pizza with variations for these pizza types and then modifier sets for sauce, meats and veges.

Does anyone else have insight into this or any ideas how to set this up.  I think I'm pretty knowledgeable on the square set up process, the way to set up items, differences between variations and modifier sets, but this one is a little more complex and difficult.

EDIT-I've tried this workaround but unfortunately the item "Pizza" doesn't have an inventory option-I only seem to be able to add inventory to each individual pizza type IE Simply Cheese I have 10 available.

The issue with this is you may sell 5 Simply cheese so your inventory will decrease say from 10 to 5 for this one item, however the 5 left over could be used on another pizza.

So what I'm really asking is there a way to put in in one place the total number of Pizza bases and when you sell a pizza it decreases the pizza dough/base count?

Heya @Eddiemunster3,

Thanks for writing in with this question!

Setting up variations as you've described would be the same workaround I'd suggest to keep track of your pizza bases. Right now, it doesn't look like there are any other third-party app integrations that would make tracking base ingredients more straightforward, but I'm hoping some other sellers with similar set-ups can share how they've set up their items and tracking.

@Eddiemunster3
Try out Restoke it integrates with Square and you are able to add prep recipes as well as menu recipes and can reference prep items/ingredients and recipes for each menu item including modifiers. I have just started using it and it seems like it may fit your use case. I believe they have a free trial period also.
