Virtual Gift Card not being accepted at Square Register

We had a customer purchase with a virtual gift card they had been gifted and when we try to enter it into Square Register we get the prompt "Invalid Credit Card The card number you entered appears to be a gift card. Please enter a valid credit card number (see screenshot). I had a Square terminal as well at the counter when I entered the gift card number in the terminal it accepted it as the form of payment. Is there a setting I am missing in my register that would prevent me from being able to accept a virtual gift card on it but at the same time the terminal works just fine?

I am using Square Register (the device). This option is not available as a payment method on Square Register. I typically have a line and do not have time to get a computer to accept a payment from a Square Giftcard that a Square Device doesn't accept. For physical gift cards those are put in on exactly where I put this one in and they are accepted.

@pbakeshop My humble apologies.  I totally misunderstood your post, and see that very clearly now!  Now that I understand, Honestly, I can not see how you were ever able to put physical gift cards into a screen meant to verify credit/debit cards.  I tried it on mine and it doesn’t work that way, nor has it ever.

 

You didn’t specify which POS you are using on your Register.  But all three (standard, Retail and Restaurants) should have the Payment option “Gift Card.”  To manually enter a gift card, you select that and then key in the gift card number there.  It should work just fine.

 

If for some weird reason that payment option doesn’t exist, you can add it to the accepted payment methods.  To add it to the list of payment types on your standard POS or Retail POS, go to More > Settings > Checkout > Payment and enable it there.

 

Again my apologies for the incorrect reply above.  I’m removing those so as not to confuse others who happen upon this thread.  Ugh.

No checkout option under settings. This is my About and options. I looked on the web dashboard but didn't see option there either.

I wanted to jump in to offer some help!

I want to clarify first and foremost that when you mention "virtual gift cards", that you are referring to Square's eGift Cards

Based on the screenshots provided, it seems that you are using the standard Square Point of Sale app on your Square Register as well. To confirm your active payment types and check if you have enabled the Gift Card payment method, you can navigate to More > Settings > Checkout (on my app, this is listed above Hardware, and while it may appear slightly different on the register, Checkout will be listed on this first Settings page) > Payment types. On this page, your active payment types will be toggled ON.

Check to see whether Gift Card is toggled ON. A quick way to tell, is whether Gift Card is showing under Disabled Payment Types. If it is, toggle it ON. If it's already enabled, head back to your main Checkout page (not Settings).

Now, to charge an eGift card using the redemption code, follow the steps below:


1. Add items to your cart or enter a custom amount.

2. Tap Charge > Gift Cards.

3. Enter the 16 digit redemption code and tap Charge to select a payment card for the transaction.

4. Complete the payment flow.

If you're still unable to charge an eGift Card following the above steps, I recommend contacting our Support Team so that they can walk you through these steps on your Square Register.
