Creating SKU Edits Item Name
We create new items in Square Dashboard and name them according to our business needs. When the item arrives, we use Square Register to add the SKU (bar code) for the item using the "Items" screen. When we scan in the SKU, the Register changes the name we created into a new name, which we then have to edit (if we remember). This is a really bad feature and it is NOT how it used to work. It seems to be newish with a recent update.
How can we turn this OFF? It creates display, reporting, and customer service issues.

The easiest way is when Scanning in the Arrived Item, See if the SKU is actually showing as a GTIN. Put the Product code you type in as a SKU and not the GTIN. For some reason Square looks up 'New' items GTIN to help enter data Quickly but also Renames the Item as a BAD side effect. Other than that you can not TURN OFF the GTIN look up that I know of.

Thanks for the info, Keith!
I definitely scan the bar code into the "SKU" field, not the GTIN field (I put the cursor into the SKU field, then use my barcode scanner to scan the code into that field). However, Register then copies the code automatically into the GTIN field also — and then immediately updates the item name, so I can't stop it.

Since you use your Square Dashboard to create the item, could you use the Dashboard with a Scanner to scan the barcode into the SKU field? I do that with some of my items, and I do agree that the Item Name should not automatically change when you scan a Barcode to the SKU field.
Especially since Square does have an Autogenerate button to tap or select which I avoid. Unless I have a new product and want to see what Square finds. I just did a Sams Cola 12oz can since I know its not in my inventory and it gave the name of and Square gave the name of ' D Troy Titans Vol. 4 ', which would annoy me if I sold Sams cola and it changed the item name to that.

No, we don't have a barcode scanner set up on our dashboard computer. Really, Square should just turn off this feature. I can't imagine a business EVER wanting to use the name provided by this automatic SKU/GTIN search. They never make any sense.
