Can POS Software be downloaded on the Square Register?
Apparently, according to Square Tech Support, I ended p purchasing the wrong system for our businesses. And because we purchased the system back in January and just recently installed it, we cant return for a refund.
Anyway, we are trying to run 2-busineses from one location/register. So, I thought if I set up 2-locations we can keep the businesses separate, (with separate bank accounts), that things would work out. It's been a huge headache. I was just told that in order to do this correctly we would need the Square Stand with the POS system onto the iPad? But, while I was comparing the 2-systems I noticed that POS Software was compatible with the Square Register, this was listed on Square's Site. Does anyone know this to be true, and if so, how do I go about switching/downloading the software for the POS system onto the Square Register?

@CBDandE Can you explain why you were told that Register is not right for your business? As far as I understand it, Register is simply a hardware platform that can run apps like Square POS, Square for Restaurants, Square for Retail and even Square Appointments. Also, besides my first question, which software is on your Register currently?

We presently run Square for Retail and when I first called Square back in January by Square that this was the best option for me. About a week and a half ago, I was having issues I spoke w/tech supports and they told me that there was something wrong with the software and he will expedite through engineering. Then last week I called for an update and was told the Stand System w/POS would be the system of choice. Then I got on Squares website to compare the two systems and it says that the Square Register is compatible with the POS Software. I’m so confused and frustrated. I’ll be talking to Square tomorrow to try and foot his out…I can’t believe that my situation is totally unique…

@CBDandE While you are waiting to connect with the customer success team, here’s something from my research. See the screen shot below. In order to switch between Square for Retail and Square POS on your Register, it should be as simple as signing out of Square for retail, and then signing into Square POS. The software should already be on your Register. If that works, you’d just have to configure the POS for your business. The login credentials are the same Square account your use for Retail.
At least, give that a try and let me know if you need anything else.

I think the issue with the Register not being compatible is that you are trying to run 2 Businesses through it. When you set up the register for business A, all the information is taken into account that it is being used for 1 business as a POS OR Square for Retail system and not that it switches from one to another.
As for an Ipad (Square Stand system) I can choose the app to load and use. Meaning if I use the Square POS it shows differently than if I open the Square for Retail App.
Kind of like on your cell phone you can have multiple apps for a calculator or for Maps or any other type of application. They all do the same thing but may have different features that you may need here or there. So on a computer I can add programs, but if I was using a Chromebook there are programs I can not use or run. This is my understanding of the Square Register being like a Chromebook where as an Ipad is more versatile like a Mac computer.

What I did was I bought the Square Stand from Square and associated items needed like Cash Drawer and Receipt Printer. Then I bought 2 refurbished Ipads that were compatible with my Stand and got the WiFi only versions to save a few more bucks. I also bought the network receipt printer so we share the receipt printer and the cash drawer at the front register. We use the one register for Credit Card only if we can and the other does all types of transactions. Both Square stands can open the single cash drawer and use the single receipt printer. Just a few ideas how to save some money on your Stand Purchase. If you bought the register already, the receipt printer and the cash drawer should be compatible with the Square Stand. You may want to look into that.
