Square Payment Links Super Slow to Load

Hi all! I've noticed that Square payment links we've created are extremely slow to load. What I mean by this is:

1. Load the payment link, for example: https://checkout.square.site/merchant/ML1VT4MF3K78E/order/oMCsmgIa4HSSV1XHWj7EailTwBNZY

2. The products in the cart take 2-3 seconds to load. This seems to be regardless of whether it's one product or more. There's also no indicator that products are in the process of loading. Instead, it just looks blank and as if something is wrong, especially on mobile since the rest of the page is below the fold.

Is everyone else noticing this?

Especially as Square charges an extra 0.4% to use payment links, I really hope this can be resolved to be smoother and more in line with other experiences like Stripe Checkout.

Square Team, is this something that can be fixed? Loading the products faster would be great. But even as a starting point, a simple indicator that products are actually loading would be very nice.

Hi t7782T,

Thanks for bringing up this concern! A slow-loading payment link can definitely cause confusion for customers, especially on mobile. Here are a few thoughts and steps to address the issue:

1. Confirm Issue Consistency

  • Test the payment link on different devices and browsers to ensure the loading delay isn’t related to a specific platform.
  • Check your internet speed during testing to rule out connectivity issues.

2. Optimize Images and Descriptions

If your products include high-resolution images or lengthy descriptions, these might contribute to the delay. Try:

  • Reducing the size of product images.
  • Simplifying product descriptions to load less data initially.

3. Test Without Additional Products

If you’ve enabled features like add-ons or modifiers, test the link with only the core product to see if that affects loading times.

4. Enable a Loading Indicator

While Square doesn’t currently provide a built-in loading indicator for payment links, consider submitting this suggestion to the product team through Square Support. A visible indicator would indeed help customers know the page is functioning.

5. Contact Square Support

This might be an issue on Square’s end. Reach out to their support team and provide:

  • The specific link(s) experiencing the issue.
  • Device/browser combinations where the issue occurs.
  • Your feedback about adding a loading indicator as a temporary fix.

6. Compare with Other Tools

If this continues to be a pain point, you might want to explore other checkout tools (like Stripe) for specific use cases. However, I’m hopeful Square will address this with some improvements soon.

I hope this gets resolved quickly! Let us know if you hear back from the Square team or notice any changes.

Hey @t7782,

Welcome to the Community.

I  haven’t noticed any delays on our end, but I definitely understand how a lag without a loading indicator could be confusing, especially for customers on mobile.

Are you still experiencing this issue? Sometimes, loading speed can be affected by the device or internet connection. Have any of your buyers mentioned or complained about this as well?

In the meantime, testing on different browsers or networks might help narrow down the cause. If others are noticing the same, please like this post and share your experience. It helps us advocate for improvements!
