In Square Online, is there an option to limit a coupon to a maximum value discount?

Use case: Offer coupon code for $20 off t-shirts with 1 time use limit and 1 time time per user limit. However, the customer can turn this into an unlimited discount within the first use transaction.

It seems like this a no-brainer option to have with any coupon/discount offering. I know this option is available in "Discounts" in the Item Library for POS and can pass thru to Online automatically (offered automatically to all customers). However, the desired behavior is to limit the coupon to specific users. And as I understand it, you cannot configure a discount for a set of specific items AND a specific customer group that feeds through to online? This only works for POS.

In Square Online, is there an option to limit a coupon to a maximum value discount?

What am I missing?

TIA, LG

Hi @LindsGeo.  I created a brand new online dollar coupon and defined it as single-use and single-use per customer.  Then I went to my store and added two items to my cart.  I added my new test coupon to the cart and it worked just fine, distributing the discount among both items in the cart.  When I tried to add that same coupon, I was given the error message that it was not a valid coupon.  So, that seems to be what you are looking for, isn’t it?

Can you post screen shots of how you have the coupon set up?  Also, maybe post a screen shot of you adding a couple of items to a cart and then successfully adding the same limited dollar coupon more than once?  I can’t make it happen at all.

Having said that, if you have a percentage coupon and limit it to one per customer, that could be an issue.  Currently Square Online doesn’t allow us to say that a 10% coupon has a limit of $10 per order.  I could see where that would be useful, but if that is what you are looking for then it looks like it will require a feature request.

I’ll be on the lookout for those screen shots and any other information you can give me so that I can try to replicate what you posted.  Also, if you are comfortable doing so, post a link to your web site, along with the coupon code that you think is misbehaving.  I’ll try seeing if I can replicate the problem and maybe give you some suggestions.  I won’t actually send an order, though, as I will be able to see what I need to in the cart.

Thanks!

I have a similar question. I am setting up a coupon that can be given to a lot of customers but for 1 time use each.  But how would square know if a customer uses it more than once?  All that it produces is a qr code for the coupon.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Chris

Hey there, @choster

Are you sending the coupon out via Square Marketing? If so, each customer is given a unique code that can only be used once. Once it is used in a transaction, it will no longer be valid.
