How to add a category filter to on-site search results?

I carry multiple lines of products that use the same item numbers. When customers go onto my site and enter the number for the item they're looking for, for example 310, how do I include a category filter so they can exclude all of the other 310s that aren't relevant to their search?

The Shop All section has a category filter which is great, and shows this should be possible, but the option to filter by category disappears when it comes to search results.

The search bar shows results matching the text entered and there is, unfortunately, no way to filter the results.
