@JulieK_OSG No, you don’t have to use Shippo. I use PirateShip for several reasons, no monthly fee, and since we are mobile I can ship from anywhere in the USA using the area address I’m shipping from, but keep my home address on the label. The only drawback is you you have to manually enter the shipping info in Pirate Ship since there is no API to connect directly to Square, where Shippo connects to Square and all the shipping info is loaded automatically for you.
One other thing. When you use an outside Shipping service to ship, you will have to manually add the tracking number in Square. To do this on the orders page, click the customers name like you are going to print the order. The customers info will popup on the right hand side, beside the print icon you will see 3 dots, click on that, then click on Mark As, then item shipped. From there you can enter the tracking number.
