when i try to process a transaction it asks for a 4 digit pass code that i have never needed before. Why?

Is it possible that you have activated team permissions by accident? To remove Team Permissions access from the Square app:
At this point, all persons using the Square app will need to enter their own personal passcode. If you’d like to require no passcodes at all, turn Passcodes off.
