Trouble Uploading Main Banner Photo

hi, i'm in the middle of creating my first website and i am using the free subscription and the most website template. i have managed to upload my products with photos and they are working all fine. the problem is when i try to upload a photo for my main banner. i have tried uplading multiple photos but all i get is a grey image every time. when i click the edit button, the image is up there as a preview and i can edit the โ€˜improve readability.โ€™ when i make it lighter or darker and save it it just makes the grey image more lighter or darker.
 
this actually happens to any photo i try to upload, even when i try and add a new section. i really donโ€™t know what Iโ€™m doing wrong.
