Questions re using Square payment processing with a WIX store

I've got a WIX store & I'm selling online.
I want to sell offline as well.

So here's what I think I should do:

  • Within WIX, setup Square as the payment processor.

  • Install the WIX app on my phone.

  • Buy a $59 Square card reader (https://squareup.com/au/en/hardware/reader)
QUESTION: Does this reader work/communicate with the WIX app?
The WIX docs only refer to a Square magstrip reader that plugs into the phone, which isn't sold in Aust.

QUESTION: When I sell an item using the above setup, does the inventory in the WIX store update?

I think it should, because I'm using the WIX store for my items, and only using Square to process the payment.

Hey @johnno,

I'm not aware of any API integrations Wix has with our readers unfortunately - I'd say your best bet selling offline / in person would be to use the Square Point of Sale app.

It'd ultimately be up to Wix to build integration for Square Readers via our APIs. I've not heard of them integrating our readers in the past, so if you have a link to where you read about an integration with our older swipe reader in the US I'd be happy to take a look and try and see what that's all about! Do Wix make a Point of Sale type app in addition to their online store platform?

Thanks for the quick reply.

See this WIX support article on setting up a mobile POS using WIX & Square:
https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-stores-setting-up-mobile-pos-on-the-wix-mobile-app

Step 4 refers to getting to getting a free magstrip reader from Square.

So if the magstrip reader works with this setup, will the tap & go reader also work?

Thanks @johnno - I wasn't aware of this integration!

For Australia, you'd need to check whether the Wix app supports our Contactless + Chip reader. The older swipe-only Square reader won't actually work by itself in Australia - because 99% of Australian issued cards now come with chip or tap, these cards will by default need to be run through the chip reader. We don't actually make the swipe reader available as a stand alone product in Australia (though it does come with our Contactless + Chip reader for gift cards and international cards that don't have chips).

The free swipe reader promo is available in the US because their market is still largely swipe based, so this is something that still has widespread use there. The Contactless + Chip reader is a more complex and powerful piece of hardware so we're not able to give them away for free - however at $59 they are a pretty affordable entry point into taking card payments.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help here! If you're using the Wix app, check with them as to whether it will work with the Contactless + Chip reader as well as the older plug-in swipe one. I took a look but couldn't find any reference to it on Wix's website.

Alternatively, you could also try out Square's free Point of Sale app with the Contactless + Chip reader to see if this may make a viable in person payments solution for you!

I asked WIX support if the contactless reader would work - they said YES:

"Any Square connected reader will work, connection to the Square app is essential."

Thanks for the additional info @johnno!

This will be handy to know in the future and I'll direct other sellers with questions about the Wix integration here 👍

I imagine this works by connecting the reader to Square's POS, then the Wix POS will switch between the two apps to process a card payment!
