Afterpay Card charges/sale on website, but afterpay is disabled.

I recently noticed a high fee on an online sale which I investigated and found it to be an Afterpay charge (6% plus $0.30). Further investigation suggested that this was a Mastercard payment.

I questioned this with support and was told that it was correct, and the customer had used an Afterpay card that was linked to their Mastercard. I think that's how it works.

I let this go at the time, but it has been annoying me because the fee was about $3 more than I'm normally charged for a $60 item.
I do not use Afterpay and have no idea on what services are available, but I would have thought that if I disabled the service, the customer should not be able to use a linked card, and if they can, why do I get charged for something I have no control over?

Interested to see if anyone else as experienced this or know a bit more about how the Afterpay Card service works. Is it just like another Credit Card?

Hi @RobbieJewellery,

Thanks for reaching out with your question about Afterpay cards.

You mentioned you don't use Afterpay with your Square Online site, but I just want to double-check that you have disabled this option within your Account & Settings page? You can check this by following these steps.

Right now, I can't confidently confirm the expected behaviour for Afterpay Cards linked to digital wallets  for online payments, but I would assume this type of payment would be blocked if you had disabled the Afterpay payment type on your Square account. I'll need to do some more digging here with the Afterpay Team to confirm the expected behaviour.

In the meantime, please let me know if you have already disabled the Afterpay option on your account.

Hi Laurie,

Thank you for looking into this. I just checked and the page says inactive, 1st image.

Also checked the Online settings which gives option to enable afterpay, so I'm assuming that means it is disabled. 2nd image below.

Thank you for sending this screenshot across, @RobbieJewellery. If Afterpay was enabled prior to this transaction being processed, that would explain why this was successfully processed. If you turned Afterpay off prior to this transaction, please reach out to our support team, so we can escalate this further.
