Not sure if this is just for Square Register, but that's what we are using. After the update, colors on the customer facing terminal and the register have changed. The customer facing terminal used to be blue buttons with white (especially relevent with loyalty) but has changed to grey . Same when completing a transaction on the register, the buttons are now black.
It looks bad on the customer display and now my customers are confused as to what loyalty coupons they do have.
I've looked everywhere to change the colors back and there doesn't seem to be an option. Anyone know where to find this? thanks
Yeah both of my registers had the same thing happen. It’s really annoying when we come in and find surprises from automatically installed updates. I am spending half my day leaning over and telling customers that they can redeem because they are used to the button turning blue if they have something redeemable and staying gray if they don’t
Me too! I hate the black and white!
Hello @Fetched-Up ! Yeah there's another thread on this called "POS Customer Display Changed Colors". We actually got a Square customer service person to help. This was her initial response:
"I did look into this and found that this change was made intentionally to give Square a more unified, modern look and to improve accessibility for sellers with limited color vision. If you can share a photo of what you’re seeing and a bit more about why the new design isn’t working for you, I’ll do my best to escalate this and see if there’s any option to opt out."
I responded (as did others), that if accessibility was the goal, it's actually harder to see now and can we please opt-out as customers (especially older ones) and employees are complaining. Some sellers submitted photos. This is what she eventually found out:
"Unfortunately, I did get some bad news. The team confirmed there isn’t an opt-out option right now or plans to revert this change. I totally understand this isn’t ideal and passed your frustrations along to the engineers.
You can also send a feature request asking for the option to choose your own colors — I think that’s an awesome suggestion. I do like to be clear, submitting a feature request doesn’t guarantee the change will happen, but it definitely helps the team understand how important this is. I’ll mark this as the Best Answer for now so other sellers who come across this thread know what’s going on.
I know this is a bummer. If you need anything else, just let me know."
So apparently, if we want back what wasn't broken in the first place , we have to request and wait and hope. Sorry for the bad news , but hope this helps explain at least where we all are. It's just so frustrating! TOV
Thanks for letting me know. I searched for before posting and couldn't find that post.
I wonder if they actually tested this with limited color vision people. I am pretty color blind and this makes it so much much worse for me. They need to realize that making customer facing changes affects our customers. Indeed it is frustrating.
A friend's terminal lost its blue last weekend and presented in black/grey instead. She was worried but it worked just fine.
My stands, terminal, and hand helds are still showing blue. I don't have a register.
This is absurd accessibility should always be an option not the primary focus. I worked on systems for a major corporation for years and we always adhere to having access accessibility options. Main users should always have a choice of being able to choose the colors and the accessibility users should be able to choose what they want to have on the screen. I’m getting really tired of Square becoming more and more complex and a lot more difficult to use I’m seriously thinking about taking my business elsewhere
I forgot to mention that white text on a gray background is impossible for me to read. I have an eye disease that causes problems with this. So now you’ve transformed a very usable color block screen with a completely unusable gray and white block screen. How does this make sense?
I am becoming increasingly frustrated with Square implementing “features” without proper end user testing. No notice and no option to revert.
Funny thing is I’ve applied to be a beta tester, but have been rejected multiple times. A corporate guy now running a small business. I’ve led teams of 30 devs and QA for a multi billion dollar org; I’ve also consulted with orgs much larger than Block.
I am also color blind so I love the accessibility perspective;,it sounds great but isn’t rooted in anything tangible. If you want accessibility, tell us the colors instead of using a color palette or hex codes. my smart light bulbs tell me the actual color.
The last reorg of the menu system, that everyone has complained about, tells us a lot about end user feedback. They have an agenda that doesn’t include users their system. Charge more and forget your customers in the name of profit.
Ours changed too. I hate it! I don't hate it... I just don't like it... at all, and it's terrible. (Sorry, I can't help quoting The Office in every situation where it applies. 🤣)
We're also super frustrated with this change. It hasn't proven to be an improvement for accessibility at all. Is someone able to explain how this is more accessible and for whom? Overall, it's just made the screens harder to navigate for both staff and customers.
I am an accessibility user and removing the color option is horribly damaging to my giving good customer service. It slows me down immensely while my customers become impatient. Totally absurd as I’ve stated before
I spoke too soon. Square iPhone app and square handheld has now gone dark. I’m guessing the iPad/stand will soon too.
i don’t mind it.
Seems like this is one of those changes that we’re just going to have to learn to live with. It’s bad though. They really need to get feedback via beta testing before making these types of changes
