Data Export has wrong email subscription status

If i filter a group based on the Marketing Customer option, then the results don't match what's output in an export of the same group within the export's Email Subscription Status field. Some customers, for example, who are listed on Square as subscribed are listed in the export as 'unknown'.

 

I've contacted support and they say this is 'expected behavior'. Really? Who would want this kind of behavior.

 

Anyone else see this?

 

Please fix.
