Hi. Second time I’ve tried with a brand new, out of the box square and it’s coming up Permanently Broken. Brand new. Just took it out of the box.
Tried different phones, tablet etc, same result. What’s the deal?

I'm sorry to hear you've had two dud readers in a row. Readers can be damaged by rough handling in the shipping process, if the reader is dropped onto a hard surface or a variety of other reasons. Once the failsafe on the reader is triggered, it would need to be replaced under warranty. You can file a warranty claim for your Square contactless and chip card reader online in the Square Shop, or from a retailer, if you purchased it in store.
Exact same thing happened to me and thousands of others world wide it turns out, after a little research I did into this problem. Square should not be able to get away with this. What a joke! Mine was taken straight out of the box after sitting in a safe environment for months. It charges up just fine but is totally useless now and it's the second one I've tried. Should I even bother getting a replacement? Why should we have to pay for such a poorly designed product? What a scam. Take our money then give nothing back but poor products and poor service. So typical of the world we live in today. We do all the hard work, barely surviving, they get rich from us all and do nothing. Just take take take! They make money from doing nothing. Then the only product they do provide doesn't even work reliably when you need it the most. I've never had one that worked. I gave up on them. Went to Stripe instead and will now get one of their readers if Square can't explain to me why they think this is acceptable. And I'll be telling as many as I can about this.
