The title of this thread has been edited from the original: I need some very simple help about the steps to use square when making a sale.
I am sorry this is such a simple, basic question, but I am unsure and can't find an answer. Always I am shown the sales pitch. When you start the sale, enter the amount, press the box "charge", then the page is "Tap or insert into card reader" . What do I do then, on this page? That's my question, on the phone on that page, what do I do? There is the box below "Tap To pay". In all circumstances do I press that box? It is just that it is not indicated as an action on the instruction videos etc. I can see it takes me to a page saying "hold card to back of phone", but is it only for that, and does it negate the reader? Or is it not a problem and you just push that box in all cases any way? You see I have a lot of difficulty getting the customers card contact, or the phone contact, either on the reader or on my phone.

Hi @okikase,
Iโd be happy to provide some clarity behind what youโre seeing here.
If you tap the Charge button and see Tap or Insert Card Reader, this indicates your Square Reader is on and ready to take payments. To proceed, simply tap the customer's card or phone (if they're using a Digital Wallet like Apple Pay or Google Pay) against the top of your Reader, or insert the customerโs chip card.
If your Square Reader isn't recognising the customer's card or digital wallet, please try the troubleshooting steps in this Support Centre article:
The Tap to Pay button you're seeing is for a separate payment method to the Square Reader, that uses NFC technology to capture payments on your phone without the need for additional hardware. Taking payments with a Square Reader and Tap to Pay both incur the same processing fee rate, so which method you choose is entirely your preference and based on the needs of your business. If you choose this option, you'll be prompted to place the customer's card or digital wallet against your phone to capture the payment.
If you'd like to use Tap to Pay, but it isn't recognising your customer's card or phone, try the following:
- Ensure your device is compatible with Tap to Pay.
- Verify that Tap to Pay is enabled in your Square app (go to More > Settings > Account > Tap to Pay).
- Review the relevant article for your device type:
Hope this helps! If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out. ๐
