Take an order at a craft fair

Sorry, newbie here, this is probably really easy, but I need to ask it.

I sell handmade items, mostly at craft fairs and I need to be able to take orders on the fly for customers who may want a different colour or size of an item, that may not be set up in my Item Library.

At the moment I'm just writing it all down manually, but I'm starting to get into a mess and would like to be able to record these orders properly in my square system - I use the free Retail POS on my iPad.

My scenario at the weekend was someone who wanted a headband in a colour I didn't have, but could get, in a specific size, which I didn't have. I knew how much I wanted to charge them, but I couldn't put it through my system, as it didn't currently exist as an item.

There must be a simple way to take bespoke orders or commissions, but I can't seem to work out what it is.

All help gratefully received, as I don't want to lose orders or sales because I don't know how to use the system properly.

Hey @PorterTribe - I can think of a couple of ways to do this (one is probably like how you already do).

Option one - Take a custom amount payment and write the details in the note section. The info will be kinda hidden though in the transactions menu where you'd have to find the right transaction to see the details.

Option two - use the invoicing feature. Built right into the app you can create an invoice with either an item (where you make a note of the changes) or a custom amount with a note about the order. This will give you the opportunity to enter all the customer details and keep the transaction visible in the invoices screen (you can also print a copy out). Payments can still be taken on your device and the customer will get a copy of everything emailed over.
