iOS 15 Devices no longer supported after 3/1/25

The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: Do we need to replace our ipad mini 4 if they can't go to iOS 16?

We just received an email saying that square is dropping its support of iOS 15 and lower. We've used our ipad mini 4 for the last several years as small, portable registers, but they can't update to iOS 16 as they don't have the required hardware.

Will we be able to use ANY of square if we still use these ipad mini 4s? Like can we use the plug in magstrip reader or contactless chip readers? Or will everhthing completely be cut.

We are still growing and dont' have the funds to buy a ton of new equipment. Ugh!

I can't find much on their website about specifics. Thanks!

Hi @ericemorga - Thanks for your post. TLDR; Devices running on iOS 15 and below will still be able to take payments, but will no longer receive the newest updates.

New releases of the Square Point of Sale app will only be available on devices running iOS 16 and later. You can still accept payments and run your business as usual, but to continue to take advantage of the latest features and new products, as mentioned by @oofumconclusion @ryanwanner and @rtfulk, we recommend upgrading your device. You can view supported devices from the compatibility page. You will not need to replace any readers, just your iOS devices that will no longer be supported. If you're using a Square Stand with these older iPads, you may need to upgrade to the newer model of our Stand so your new iPads and Stands are compatible with one another.

Delivering the best software and payment experience is important to us, and this change will enable us to do so. If you're interested, you can apply for hardware financing to help with the cost of any new hardware you may need.

I hope this information is helpful but please do let me know if you have any additional questions.

Hello @ericemorga !

I agree with @oofumconclusion that any future update won't be installed on your system. Will your iPad continue to run Square? Possibly. I actually had an ancient iPad 2 that ran Square long past its end of support date, but I've also heard of sellers whose system wouldn't load Square after the end date.

Usually in cases like this, the existing software will continue to function, but you won't receive any additional updates (and if one is available you may not be able to install it). The challenge here is that you're dealing with sensitive card information. I encourage you to update as quickly as possible.

One idea that may help you out: I converted my cell phone account into a business account with T-Mobile. I've been able to add a line and finance devices for my shop. Their financing plans are for two years and usually they'll take the old device on trade when it's time to upgrade. I figure I don't need the latest and greatest device out there--as long as it's upgradeable--so my monthly finance cost is anywhere from $25-50. A lot better than shelling out money for a new device! This may work for you as well depending on your cell provider.

One other thing with hardware, with bluetooth BLE, the older ipads may not be able to connect to the newer Square chip/tap readers.
