What do I need to do to file a quarterly report for my small business?

I started running a small business for the irrigation company this year and I got a letter saying I need to file a quarterly report. I have no idea where to start or what I need to do! Someone please help me figure it out!

Hi @Hheiniger7.  You didn’t say who the letter was from, so understand I’m just throwing darts at the board in my answer.  But….

This could be from any number of people — state sales tax, state unemployment and or payroll tax people for example.  There are a number of reports that we are required to file on a regular basis once we obtain a business license.  Some of them even require that we remit money — such as the sales tax reports showing how much we collected and are required to pass on.  There will be more that come up, no doubt.

The letter you received should have given you a web site address to go to to fill out a form, or at least find one to fill out and print.  There will be instructions for doing so on that site.

Also, you should sit down with someone to go over what else you are required to do in this area of compliance.  Your local county, city and state should have web pages that give you a list of what is required in your state, city and county.  Even better, it is worth the time and expense to sit down with an accountant and attorney to be sure you’ve got the list.  Another great resource is SCORE.  They do small business counseling and mentoring.  Their national home page is here, and you can search for a chapter near you.

Whatever you do, don’t try to navigate all of this by yourself.  It’s never a good idea to do that.  I wish you well.  Feel free to ask any other questions you have, but remember that we can not give legal or financial advice here.  We can only guide you to people who are qualified to assist you.
