Tipping coffee shop and retail store

I own a retail store and coffee shop. Customers check out at the same spot. We have had customers lately ask us to turn credit card tipping on. If we do this the options are smart tips where it is a percentage if the sale is above $10 or it is $1 $2 $3 or customer. Or I can choose 3 set percentages and custom tip. Can I change it to only be $1 $2 $3 and custom tip regardless of the sale?

Or can I make it so the percentage is only based on the coffee part of the sale?

HI @coteaucottage.  Two answers:

  1. If Smart Tipping is turned on, what you see is what you get.  $1/2/3 for under $10, percentages for over $10. There is no way to make it the set amounts for all sales. If you turn Smart Tipping off, the percentages you set are what the customer always sees.
  2. No, you can not pick and choose what items are subject to the tip.  It’s always based on the check total.  The only possible workaround I know for this would be to have two POS — one that runs the Retail POS for retail sales and doesn’t prompt for tips ever, the other that runs Square POS and does prompt for tips.  That’s probably overkill for your operation, though.
