For the longest time sales tax was set correctly and all of my online sales from all over the U S were properly taxed.
After the Payment Link update October 6, it stopped working, and then after support chat, it now only works if you buy something within my state.
All online sales should be taxed. They always have been.
Here is a screenshot of an email prior to Oct 6.
You can see it was working then.
Also I stopped getting these customer copies emailed to me after Oct 6 as well.
Hi @Digerati!
Thanks for reaching out to share your feedback with us!
While I can’t speak to the details of your support chat, we generally recommend that Square account owners add the appropriate tax enrollments in their settings to ensure US taxes are automatically calculated.
It’s also best to consult with your tax advisor to confirm which registrations, if any, are required based on the states or regions you plan to ship to.
When you’re ready to review or update your tax settings, you can follow the steps outlined in our online guide.
To make sure you receive Payment Link notification emails, go to your Square Dashboard > Payments & Invoices > Payment Links > Settings > General. On this page, confirm that your Email Notifications are set according to your preferences, and that the email listed in your account is current.
If you continue not to receive these notifications, please let us know, and we can investigate further.
I have the toggles in place. I get two emails, but never the third like before where it was a copy of the customer receipt and it was easy to get the address for the customer this way without having to log in and dig to get it.
Its a problem with Square and I am sure of it. It started right after the email about the update to payment links in early OCT.
On the tax that is a problem too every since the update in early OCT.
Here is the payment link.

Enter any address OUTSIDE of Mississippi and it will not add sales tax.
It used add the tax for every state.
Refresh the payment link and add any MS address (google it) and it will add the tax.
Hi @Digerati, sorry for the long wait, our team is catching up on a few threads this week. 🙏
Hmm, okay, if that hasn’t solved the issue (and I’ve just tested the payment link myself using a US address outside Mississippi), then let’s have you review your Shipping & non-physical taxes.
Similar to before, navigate in your Square Dashboard to Settings > Payments > Sales Taxes. At the top of this page, you should see your created sales tax and any tax enrollments. Further down, you’ll reach the Fulfillment tax settings, where we’re looking specifically at Shipping & non-physical tax overrides.
Select Manage settings, and check whether you have “Manually apply taxes based on destination” enabled. If so, the issue may be that you haven’t set a manual tax rate for this fulfillment method. I’d recommend switching this to “Apply automatically generated tax rates”, then saving your changes and testing the payment link again.
If the issue continues, let me know. I’ve also ensured you’ll be able to reach phone support directly by calling 1-855-700-6000 (Monday through Friday, 6 AM to 6 PM Pacific Time), so they can review your settings in more detail and help resolve this quickly.
Still not working . I went and did just as you said. See here if I manually enter Florida, it will not work.
If I enter Mississippi my own state it works.
IT USED TO WORK AND APPLY FROM ALL STATES until your October 2025 update.
It needs to work. IF the IRS is collecting sales tax, I need to collect from EVERY sale from wherever the customer is.
@Digerati, just confirming, have you only added a single tax enrollment for Mississippi?
In my initial response, I mentioned the importance of adding all relevant tax enrollments for each location you plan to ship to. If Mississippi is the only state you’ve added, the system will only automatically calculate and apply tax for orders shipped within Mississippi.
If you want tax to be applied for orders going to all US states, you’ll need to add each of those states to your enrollments. You can do this by updating your tax settings here.
Once you have added all relevant enrollments, please test the link again.
