Surcharge fee

I wanted to know more about this surcharge fee. First and foremost, I believe it should be a processing fee instead. I just cannot see how we’d have to manually enter the surcharge through the pos but for online orders it would go automatically to checkout.
I believe if it says processing fee it would be ok with any type of payment. Another thing is that I have a self order system kiosk through a third party integrated with square. If I add the “surcharge” which I named processing fee it doesn’t show on the kiosk.
Which it should since all the changes I do on my pos automatically changes on the kiosk as well.
When will square fix that? We need to find a solution to pass those square fees. They are way tooooooooo much

Hi @Brazucagrill-1.  Let’s see if you can tackle your questions and issues.

I wanted to know more about this surcharge fee. First and foremost, I believe it should be a processing fee instead. I just cannot see how we’d have to manually enter the surcharge through the pos but for online orders it would go automatically to checkout.

When Square first introduced surcharges to help cover processing fees for businesses that wanted to pass fees on to the customers, not everyone wanted to do that.  Also, some states didn’t allow it.  And some states restricted which types of cards could be surcharged and which could not.  The law was a mess depending on where you lived!  So, Square decided to make this manual at POS so that sellers did not mistakenly get in trouble.  Now that this is no longer an issue, I’d bet they are working to automatically add surcharges at POS like they do online.  But, if you want to make a suggestion to the POS team that you think that credit card surcharges should be automatic on POS like they are online, you can do so by following this link.

If you are having a problem with a third-party kiosk not passing through all of your Square data, this must be taken up with the third-party.  Square provides the APIs and other tools for third-party developers to use with your account.  Anything that doesn’t work is not Square’s problem, usually.  Call your kiosk company and start troubleshooting with them.

If you don’t like Square’s fees, you should shop around.  Personally, I did that once.  I went to another processor who promised me their fees were much lower than Square’s fees, and that they had a much better POS, etc.  Man did they lie!  Square’s fees are competitive with the competition.  Banks, and others, will tell you that they charge less, but they don’t tell you about the monthly statement fees, processing fees, sliding interchange fees, service fees, dispute fees, and on and on and on.  And since Square’s basic POS is free with no monthly fee, that makes Square an even better deal.  I pay much less that a few people I know around me who tried other solutions.

Anyway, good luck.

Chip did a great job explaining processing fees for Square. While I do implement a processing fee for deliveries online generally I advise against adding a processing fee at checkout. Personally and from a customer point of view it's better to add the processing cost into the price of the product (even though the result is the same) because it doesn't look like you're nickel and diming the customer. I always advise business owners to look at your competition to see what they're doing and to always look at it from the customer point of view. A flat price+tax is a lot easier to digest than a flat price+tax+surcharge.

I totally agree with @PartyManiaMD when it comes to adding a surcharge to cover the processing fees.  If your items and/services are priced right, it all works.  After all, just think if the customer had not only a separate fee for credit card processing, what about adding additional fees for rent, insurance, electric, etc.  Not sure why the cc fee is more important than any of the other costs of doing business.  Just a thought of course.
