Square Reader for a booth at fair and of multiple shifts

I have several shifts and I am worried that people will forget to sign out.  They are connecting with bluetooth to the Square reader.

They will be logging on with a device code. I am worried that if one person doesn't sign out others will not be able to sign.  I know for blue tooth connections they say stay within 10 ft. for it to work properly. So, if someone forgets to sign out an then leaves the area can the next employ sign in?   With the same device code? Or will it need to be a new device code if someone didn't disconnect properly?

I have not used Square before and I am trying to make it as easy as possible for my volunteers.

Thanks for any information that will help.

@jansyRH  Welcome to the community. I think I understand your question and hope this reply helps.

1. Signing In with a Device Code
• A device code logs the tablet or phone into your Square account (linked to a specific location).
• Once signed in, anyone using the device is accessing that same point of sale session.
• You don’t need a new device code every time—just one per device unless you manually log it out.

 2. Bluetooth Square Reader Behavior
• A Bluetooth reader (like the Square Reader for contactless + chip) stays paired with the device it’s connected to.
• It does not lock out other users based on proximity.
• If someone leaves with the reader but doesn’t turn off Bluetooth, it might still be trying to stay connected, which could cause hiccups.

Your Main Concern: What If They Forget to Sign Out?

  • If they leave the area (more than 10 ft):
  • The Bluetooth reader disconnects automatically.
  • The app stays signed in, but the next volunteer can still use the app (same device, same session).

  • No need for a new device code unless:
  • You choose to log out of the Square app entirely.
  • You’re changing locations or users with different permissions.

Best Practices for Volunteers & Shared Use

 1. Use One Device Code Per Shift Device
• Set up each tablet or phone once with a device code for that location.
• No need to log out between volunteers.

 2. Enable Employee Passcodes (if needed)
• Under Team Management, assign simple PINs so each person logs their name with sales.
• This is optional, but helpful for accountability.
