There are often large gaps between transactions using the Terminal and I find that when I do need to use it it can take maybe half a minute to get going. That is very annoying if a customer is in a rush. Is there anythinbg I can do about it. I am using a WiFi connection. The delay seems to be in loading the software.

Thanks for flagging this, that sounds frustrating and not expected.
I'd suggest making sure that your software is as up-to-date as possible, regularly, as if it's not it may lead to lagging.
I'd also suggest doing a factory reset if you don't see any improvement, the steps to reset can be found in this article.
To manually update your Square Terminal software:
If you don’t see the option to update your software, your Square Terminal is up-to-date.
We recommend leaving your Square Terminal plugged in and powered on overnight for automatic updates to complete.
