Search does not bring up anything in sub categories

As the subject says, when searching for an item, if its in a sub category, it isn't found.  How can I fix this?  We have almost 500 SKUs.. so I have to have these sub categories.  I need help quick as my employees are at a convention tomorrow!  Thanks all!

Hi @LadyFlame ! 👋

Thank you @Candlestore for your insights here. I will include some of my own below.

  • Ensure Items Have Descriptive Keywords – Sometimes, adding relevant words in the item description or name can improve searchability.
  • Use Variations Instead of Subcategories – If applicable, setting up variations under a main item may make searching more efficient.
  • Try Searching by SKU – If your employees know the SKU format, this can be a quick workaround.
  • Check the Search Settings – If using Square for Retail, try adjusting the search filters to include more details.

I hope this helps!

@LadyFlame ;

What hardware Device are you using?

I have the Square POS on my Android phone and Retail on my Square Stand at the store.

And when I am on the Checkout Tab and type the Name of an item in a Sub Category that Item does populate.

Do you have a Screen shot of where you type in the Item and how your Items are set up in Catalog in Square as a Sub Category?

As long as you have a Name associated with a Item or Variation, the search field will find it no matter which Category or Sub Category the Item is in.  Even if you have multiple items with similar names Square gives you a list of these to choose from.

For example if I type in Pumpkin.... My results come back with any Item that has Pumpkin anywhere in the name.

Pumpkin Jar, Pumpkin Spice, Pumpkin Pecan Waffles, Acorn and Pumpkins.

This is why I am asking for where your Searching for the Items that are in a Sub Category.

My jar candles are set up as Jar Candles > Sub categories 8oz, 16oz, 28oz, 34oz, Half Gallon, 1 Gallon and Pumpkin Jars.  No matter what sent I search for I get at least 1 Item per Jar size plus 1 in each of my Pillar and votive sizes.

So I am wondering if your not searching in the right search Box or have filters assigned.

so when I search for "liquid"- nothing comes up, even though there are 5 results under the category of resin... it doesn't find subcategories it seems..

Ok. so I see this on your Phone but how are your categories and sub categories set up on your Dashboard on a computer?

I was thinking Square search would not find Categories or Sub Categories and only looked for items.  On my Square Pos app on my android I searched for 28oz..... this pulled up my Categories and Sub Categories along with items and SKUs with 28oz in the name.

I am not sure why this is not working for you as even in the Last image you posted showed 4 items that show Liquid when you searched for Resin Dice.

I was even thinking they might not be available to Sell at the location but then thy should not show up as Resign Dice results either.

Make sure you have the latest update for your phone or hardware you will be using.  Android devices do not always push the latest updates.   Currently my Square POS App is 6.64sw.

Bottom right of your Screen tap More > Support > About

If these do not help you may need to call support, their number is in my signature line.
