We have been using the same motorola symbol ds6707 hand scanner on our square register for close to 3 years with no problems whatsoever. After the latest update the scanner no longer works.
The square register reconciles it and show that a scanner is connected, but again when you scan a barcode nothing shows up on the screen.
Do you have the exact model number you can provide? I can check to see if this has been reported through the support teams;
I have the DS6878 model which has shown up on Square as The Zebra DS6707 for a long time, then it switched. Still worked fine. Been using it since 2019.
As with you after scanning a few items, then scanning another item nothing shows being scanned. I had this off and on before August of 2023. It went with a Square update around August of 2023 but has returned recently.
After a few scans I need to unplug the Scanner and replug it in with the USB cord. Square sees it disconnect and sees it reconnect.
Now when I attach this to a Chromebook or Laptop I have no issues.
The Scanner has been reset to Factory and then within an hour same issue.
Now my Scanner is NOT on the list of compatible devices, but it has worked fine with Square for years until updates. Then One update fixed the issue and now it has returned. SO it is with Square's Updates.
I have the exact same setup up 5 feet away and that one has fewer problems and up till recently never gave me an issue since 2019.
The scanners are both Zebra DS6878 USB connected scanners.
My suggestion to fix this quickly would be unplug the USB cable at the scanner the Plug it back in. No idea why this seems to work for me, but sometimes it does and other times it does not always work.
