I am using a barcode scanner with Square register and when I scan an item it fills the search field with the barcode, which brings up item. But then I have to select the item to add it to the transaction, then clear the field so I scan another item. That means three operations - scan, select and clear - for each item in a transaction, which is, frankly, a major pain.
It can cause errors like selecting something twice, or not selecting it, which can cause errors in the transaction. It really seems like the app should do this automatically. I want to scan, have it add to the transaction automatically, then scan another item. Any ideas, anyone?

I recommend starting off by making sure that your Register's software is up to date. If the software is already up to date or if a software update does not resolve the issue, I then recommend that you follow the instructions listed here to perform a factory reset on your Register.

Sounds like a setting in the scanner. There are several ways to set one up. The scanner can be programmed to add an enter or other needs. Check your documentation.
