New Dashboard Interface Navigation Pain

The new updated dashboard navigation pane is poorly designed. It requires too much clicking to dig down to where you want to go. Instead of just clicking invoices as before, it's Payments & invoices -> Invoices (Drop Down) -> Invoices. Switching between invoices and items then back again is much more tedious.

Is there a way to create a frequently used or favorites on the dashboard navigation pane. I recall being able to edit it previously, I don't see that now.

As far as I've been able to determine, there is no functionality to create favorites in the new navigation. Since we're able to switch between the two versions, I'm hoping they're using this time to gather feedback on the new layout before permanently switching!

That said, if you click your business name in the upper right on the dashboard, you should see an option to switch back to the old navigation:

Hey @SQERS

Ironically I use invoices and I thought the same thing at first  It's actually  only one more "click" to get to invoices vs the other way.  To me the new menu does seem to scroll and transition smoother than the old menu.  Maybe that is just me, but getting to invoices on the new one doesn't seem as bad.

I don't jump around to items and I still need to find where everything else is nested under now since its all new.   As mentioned by @WoodCandleCo  you can definitely revert back for the time being so it doesn't interrupt your day to day.

I will point out this thread here, if you would like to add to it to potentially get back the quick access menu , give that post a like, and even share your response to how that could benefit you.

Just started using the new dashboard and it's terrible. I have an online retail-only business coupled with a wholesale business where I create invoices for customers. 99.9% of the time, I just want to jump on and print out my retail orders so I know what I'm doing today. But no. Yesterday I had to hunt around for the "Orders" menu item which was buried under a few levels. I actually had to search the help section (which you also have to hunt for) to find it. I remember this happened before, and there was a way to bring the Orders menu item to the top of the menu bar. Hey developers: ORDERS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT THING FOR US BUSINESS FOLKS. Why do you keep burying it???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Note that since I'm not working in a brick and mortar, I use my PC to access my orders. Or at least that's how I try to access them.

Hey there @mysticcoffee.. You are not alone in your assessment.  There is a lively discussion going on in the Square Champions Lounge right now.  It seems this is one of those changes that no one suspected would have as much impact as it has in the real world.  Honestly, the consolidation of navigation menus makes a lot of sense.  But what doesn't make sense is the removal of the ability for us to create Quick Links.

Anyway, here is a link to my feature request to add quick links capability back.  I think that it could be as simple as adding a new entry on the main navigation menu called "Quick Links" and then allowing us to populate that with the links we need.  Please go here and calmly and respectfully upvote it and add any helpful comments you might have.

Thanks.

Hey @mysticcoffee ! I merged your thread into this one so I can surface the feedback to our Product Managers succinctly. Thank you for your feedback and sorry about the frustration.

As @TheRealChipA suggested, please take a look at this feature request and comment if you'd like. Thanks again.

The new dashboard update was not well thought out. Maybe ask users what they want/need. you have taken something that took two clicks to get to (invoices for example) and turned it into three. This is not better in my opinion, it needs major work.

@jlb2112 to piggy back off @TheRealChipA, I also encourage you to add comments or kudo the feature request. We encourage others to comment on the thread because the more people comment or kudo, the faster it bubbles up to developers. 🙂

I just logged on to find the NEW version of the navigation board has taken over.

I changed it back to old version when it first came out because I didn't see the need for the extra clicks and had no issues with the previous version.

The left side bottom of page, and I did find a Revert to "Old version 1" but It doesn't change back.

Can anyone direct me?

yeah the new interface is generally a pain in the butt. takes me three clicks to get anywhere?

The reason the "favorites" function existed in the first place was to pare down the navigation menu to a more convenient quotidian arrangement! I don't need to use 90% of the menus on 99% of days, I need like, five buttons that take me directly from the dashboard to (e.g.) item library and the transactions tab! Nobody needs to see or modify their bank details or their business information, why are they set at the same level of interface priority as other more everyday tasks?

And then there's no button to take me back home now, I have to click BACK through the menu drop downs? I know the grift these days is to increase "uSeR eNGagEmEnT" by forcing people to interact with software more but... we already pay for the privilege of you moving credit card numbers. Your UX/UI people should be ashamed

This is such a common issue with Square; it's becoming increasingly tiresome.

I truly love their product offering. It's extremely competitive on pricing and allows businesses to operate at a more efficient level than you would expect. But it is so rough around the edges, and their development really demonstrates this.

With every change with Square, it's as if there is a constant battle between the design/front-end and more fundamental dev teams, and the design teams always win. Fundamental, functional feature requests basically never get implemented and instead we get UI updates every few months. Whether it be the POS app/terminal constantly changing (search menus becoming more buried, checkout screens actually decreasing the amount of info provided, product family navigation requiring multiple clicks etc) or the web app changing its nav menu, as in this thread, something is ALWAYS being updated.

For me, this product should first and foremost be functional. As long as the design works, you basically shouldn't need to change it.

I have experienced this both as a professional and as a consumer. Design teams seem to lobby their workplace to constantly iterate and adjust their design to justify their employment. Which I understand. But Square at a higher level needs leadership which focuses more on the usability aspect and guides its design teams to understand the user requirements as their first port of call. I have never once been asked if I like Square's new UI changes. No poll to ask if I feel it needs to be reverted or overhauled. Nothing. So, from where are they making the determination that their changes are beneficial?!

This is what annoys me the most as a professional developer. The first stages of development is understanding stakeholder requirements. The stakeholder is us, the users. Square has a fiduciary duty to their shareholders, but they genuinely would not be the primary stakeholders in the development cycle if I was leading it.

I think I speak for most people in that customer-facing stuff (i.e. terminal screens etc) is the only thing I need to be somewhat pretty. I genuinely couldn't care less if MY side of Square looked like a website from the 90s. I need quickly accessible, rapidly functional stuff. So many fundamental core features continue to be missing from Square. You know what I don't see much of in these forums? Feature requests for design changes. Most people are fine with the design. They want the product to be functionally better.

Yet, Square just rolls out changes like this which make no sense to 99% of its users who just want to access maybe 5 specific pages a day. Whoever accepted this new design without thinking "hmm, maybe we need the ability to add favourites/shortcuts" at a minimum is emblematic of the problems at Square on the whole.

I agree, at least offer an opt out option for those of us that don't need or want.
