There could be several reason for your magstripe reader suddenly not working:

  • Is it an older model?  Many readers that have been in use for several years can stop working.
  • Have you had a recent software update on the device to which the reader is attached?
  • Do you have a new device - cell phone, tablet, etc?  There may be an incompatability between it and the reader.
  • Are you getting an error message when attempting to read a card, or does nothing happen?  Either way, may just need to clean the head on the reader.

If nothing helps, you may need to replace the reader.  You can order another reader from Square from this page - just scroll down to get a choice of connectors depending on your device's input plug.
