Hi everyone — quick question for anyone using Square physical gift cards (especially with eCard Systems or a school / nonprofit setup):
Is there a reason physical plastic gift cards can’t be reloaded online through the Square gift card site / customer portal, while eGift cards can? Is this a technical limitation, security issue, or just how Square has chosen to set it up?
I’m asking because we run a volunteer middle school Cougar Store using Square POS, and we’re trying to create a simple prepaid spending system for students. Ideally, we’d like to sell physical branded student cards (so kids can keep them on a lanyard or in a wallet), let parents preload them with funds, and then allow parents to reload the same card from home throughout the year instead of us having to manually reload balances at events or in person.
It seems like physical reloadable cards would be the most practical setup for schools, camps, and similar organizations, so I’m curious if anyone has found a workaround or knows why Square limits this. Any insight would be appreciated.
