The title of this thread has been edited by a Square Moderator from the original: refund to a gift card for a split transaction? It only allows cash back.
Why can’t I refund to a gift card for split transaction payment methods? We don’t do cash refunds, only credit. But if they paid with part cash, part card, it won’t allow credit, only refund back to card or cash. Very frustrating
With a Split Transaction in Square you actually have a Transaction for each Split. I would make sure you select the Split that was paid for by Credit card if that is how your trying to refund the customer. If you only had the Recceipt or selected the Cash transaction this Could be why you can only refund the cash. The cash Transaction does not know which Card to refund the money to.
This is my guess as to why you ran into this issue.

Square does not allow a refund to a gift card (as a store credit) if there was a split payment (of any kind) at the original time of sale. I’ve been trying to address it for years but they haven’t made a change as far as I know. Good luck
