Unable to import new inventory due system not recognizing the tax column on a template we've used successfully in the past. The newest dowloaded template (as of a few minutes ago) doesn't appear to HAVE a tax column. Has anyone successfully named a column for taxes so that the system will recognize it? I chatted for an hour online with support with no resolution.
Hi @AnneGVG. It definitely looks like the tax column has been deprecated and should not be included in the import file. I can’t say why or when this happened, but it is. Since you are importing inventory changes (only?) I’d just remove that column from your spreadsheet. Lastly, I will tag the Square moderators to see if they can follow up with the appropriate team for more information, so if you can wait on importing until then, it might be advisable.

Hi, thanks for your response. I'm importing new inventory. So if I leave the yes/no tax column off, how do you suggest I make sure sales taxes are applied?
@AnneGVG That’s why I want to wait until the Square moderators weigh in. My strong suspicion is that Square is handling taxes a different way, now. Most likely, this is due to the fact that items are often taxed differently depending on whether the sale is in-person or online, whether it is pickup or delivery, etc. Many states have been changing their tax laws of late, and taxes are not so much item-related as they are destination related these days. If I am correct, that column is meaningless.
I’m pretty sure I’m right, though, since I just exported my item library and did not see that column. Still, if you want to be 💯, I’d wait until you hear from a moderator, just in case.
Appreciate your feedback! Thank you. Hopefully mods weigh in soon because this is shaping up to be messy
You’re welcome. I will mention this. I recently downloaded my item catalog to make my annual price changes. The download file did NOT contain that column, and when I uploaded the price changes, everything is still working — the prices changed, nothing else did, items are being taxed correctly. So, there’s that recent experience, too.
@AnneGVG ;
Try exporting your Current catalog and not the template. When adding new items leave the refrence Handle and Token colums empty. This should give you the template and categories you have used also. My catalog has a tax column, the template might not because you create Tax settings in Square. The Tax column in my catalog is column AM which has header Tax - Pa Sales Tax (6%) for me since I created the Pa Sales Tax (6%) in my square dashboard. I just exported the actual catalog not the template before writing this.
Thank you for chiming in. I just imported a test item and deleted the original yes/no tax column and it appears to have imported successfully so I guess the notion of the yes/no column is obsolete
