If Square requires ios 9 or higher and I don't have that yet, is there an earlier version I can use?

I have an older phone (Iphone 4), and in trying to download the Square app I am told I need IOS 9 or higher.  Is there an earlier version of Square that I can download instead, or does this mean I need to get a new phone?

Square needs to have at least iOS 9 and an iPhone 4 can only run up to iOS 7.1.2 and therefore will not be able to run the Square POS app.
