How to add a SKU number at checkout

I am brand new to square, what I would like to do is be able to add in SKU number as I sell a product without having to upload a massive spreadsheet.

$25.00 and then be able to type in a four digit number to identify what I sold, then at the end of the day be able to pull down a report that shows me my identifying number and how much I sold it for.

how do I do this?

Which Report are you trying to see?  Square has a Bunch of reports that can be printed from the Desktop and you can even make a Custom report.  There are some you can print from the POS also.  But what information are you trying to see in the report?

In the Dashboard area:

5072-summaries-and-reports-from-the-online-dashboard

You can also make Custom reports in the Dashboard on a computer

From an App:

5381-in-app-summaries-and-reports

With some of the reports you can filter by Item or Categories also before printing them.

Hi RiverToTheSeaFi,

Unfortunately you cannot enter the SKU Number at the time of the sale - normally this info is entered when you setup your item or if you need to edit or change any details about the item.  This is by design.  What you can do is run a Report on Item Sales which will show you the info you have in mind however, if the SKU is not already there, the field will be blank.   A work around would be to use the Note field during Checkout - it's a blank field that can be used for entering extra data.  As for running a Report, the Note field is not displayed in the standard Sales Report but, you can export that same Report to a CSV file - select "Detail CSV", once you have downloaded the file, you will see the Note field with the info you entered.

So at the end of the day, I should be able to print a report that has a dollar amount in a note with a SKU number…… yes?

If the person has a Scanner or can use the camera as a scanner on their POS system like you can with an Ipad on a Square Stand.  If the SKU is in a Barcode for ease of use, and scan a Barcode NOT in Square you get a Pop up asking if you would like to create said Item.  Below is a video of me typing in a SKU that was not in my system and added right from a Square Stand.

I typed in the New SKU in the Search field, Item was not found and Square Asked me if I wanted to Create the item.  The search box I started from was on the Checkout tab and you could also use a Barcode Scanner or the Ipads Camera to read the Barcode.  Now since I used Letters in the SKU I was not asked about it being a GTIN plus a GTIN has to be 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits only and no Letters.  The GTIN feature is only available with the Square for Retail Plus subscription.   Not sure how long this video will take to load to the forum.

@RiverToTheSeaFi ;

As I see this is your first post welcome to the Square Sellers Forum.

There are a few ways to enter a SKU into your item Library with Square.

  1.  As you mentioned uploading a csv file to Squares catalog would be the easiest for alot of items
  2. Create a barcode with Your SKU on it and Scan the Item, Square will then ask you if you want to add this as a new Item
  3. Go to your Items catalog on a computer and manually type in your SKUs to the SKU field
  4. On your POS device running Square, Tap More - Then Tap Items - Then search for the Item by name and then in the SKU field manually type in your SKU.
  5. Just thought of a 5th way, behind the Item name type in your 4 digit code.  I do this when a Product has a Number code, and a GTIN number just in case the GTIN barcode gets damaged.

Warnings with Methods C. and D., watch for Typing errors.  Also using a 4 digit code is not the best for a SKU, you could also use letters and numbers to give a lot more SKUs if needed.  Then on your POS or in the Dashboard you can still type in the 4 character code to search for the item.  In Square this Searches, Item Name, SKU, and GTIN Fields.  The GTIN field is only available in the Square For Retail Subscription Plan.

I still would recommend uploading your SKU's through a CSV, the other ways are time consuming.
