I’ve unticked the shipping option as I’m only doing pick up and deliveries but when i click on any items the default is still “shipping” even though I’ve unticked it. Worse still it says free shipping. Ive spent all afternoon trying to find a solution and the only thing I’ve managed to do is add a flat rate price to the shipping option.
Can you actually remove the shipping option permanently? If so how do I do it?

Have you tried changing fulfillment options on an item level? You can bulk-edit (or edit on an individual item level) your website items to disallow shipping on a per-item level.
From your item list in Square Online, tick the box at the top of the list to bulk edit all items:

From the "Bulk edit" menu, select "Set fulfillment":

From the next screen, choose which options you wish to offer for fulfillment, then press "Set fulfillment":

You may need to wait a few minutes for the changes to reflect on your website.
