Having trouble with tap to pay

This is what it tells me if a customer tries to pay me through tap to pay unable to start reader if the issue persist contact your payment service provider for more information. If anybody knows how to fix this or help me out I’m a barber and I need help.

Sorry to hear you're having issues - we could use a bit more info but, please understand that the volunteer Community members are not the same as Tech or Customer Support.  There is however quite a bit of hands-on experience using Square's Apps and Hardware.

 

Was Tap to Pay working previously and stopped working or is the first time you have tried to use it ?

Are you using Apple or Android ?

Do you have the latest version of Square's POS App ?

(Also ensure that your smart device is running the latest operating system.)

I just upgraded my phone to a Samsung Galaxy z fold 6 and the tap to pay has been working but on the new fold 6 the tap to pay is not even a option? What can I do . [email protected]

It's kind of ridiculous.  Seems like Apple/Square decided that if we don't upgrade to ios17 they will cut us off overnight. No warning. I have no interest in upgrading - they will just take more of my time with extra apps, and make things more complicated. If it's my business Square that forces an upgrade to software I don't want - even when tap to pay was working, that really sucks.  I'm still considering Clover - has anyone switched? Are they more reliable?

Last week Tap to Pay was working. this week, it says I need to upgrade my ioS on Apple in order to work.  

 

I have no interest in upgrading - since I'll just be getting extra features I didn't ask for, and forcing me to 2FA that will make things miserable if I ever lose my phone.

 

Can someone please help with a workaround? Even the help page just changed overnight - yesterday it was ios 16.4 that was ok.  Good lesson to never upgrade Square - no good will come of it - it will just break.

 

I'm running 16.4.

Hi there, sorry to hear that you're experiencing some issues with Tap to Pay. I can certainly provide you with some more information.

Tap to Pay on iPhone is currently available with Square Point of SaleSquare AppointmentsSquare Invoices and Square for Retail. Please make sure that your Square App is updated to the latest version. You will need an iPhone XS or newer and the phone must be running iOS 15.5 or later to use Tap to Pay on iPhone. Additionally, you can double-check your Tap to Pay settings by following the instructions listed here.

Unfortunately, there is no workaround for this. 

 

Operating systems include new security measures in updates and, in many instances, those new measures help us better protect our Sellers and their customers. 

 

Not upgrading the Square app is not a solution either, as once you miss too many updates, the app will have issues. 

 

We regularly test operating systems to ensure we are compatible with the latest ones and we stop supporting any that might no longer comply with the security protocols we require.
