Getting 'invalid response' message when trying to activate credit card payments

We have just created a new account (our first time using Square). We believe we have correctly completed the activation process, yet when we try to link readers we are our account isn't activated so I click on 'get started', follow the process, and am then directed to the Square website in my web browser which instantly asks to open in the Square app. On clicking 'Open', I receive the following error message: 'Invalid response. The server returned an unexpected response. Please try again later.'

Any ideas?

We are at our wits end, with an event for 800 people in 2 days and a system that does not work. I can't contact Square Customer Service - the live chat button does not go anywhere and the phone option says it is unavailable.

The error message you're seeing on your reader indicates that your account isn't activated for payment processing just yet. Reach out to our team on 1800 760 137, so we can take a closer look at your account. Our lines are open from Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm AEST.
