Has anyone ever had Square attempt to take money out of a linked Bank Account based on their linking your data to an old debt or account? I am on the Board of a Non-Profit. I just received a notification that they were hitting the non-profit with approximately $1,500.00 in collection on a passed debt I know nothing about based on an email I never had. It is perplexing. I have been on with multiple departments for over an hour trying to solve this.
@AOG 1st step is always verify the e-mail address and sender, it shouldn't ask for any account information or anything. #2 square is really adamant about only 1 e-mail address per account, so if you got an e-mail it should only be for that account. the only way they could link would be tax id number in my opinion.
I would start there first, I am assuming you have a square account?
@AOG ;
The only thing I would add is, the only time I know of Square taking money from a Linked account is for people using Square and not hitting the amount owned for a Loan payment if you have one with Square. For example if you have a Loan out and your Payment is supposed to be $4500.00 and your current payment amount was only $3000.00; you would still have an amount due for the payment of $1500.00. Does your Non-Profit have 2 Step verification setup on your Square account? Square would not be able to collect a Debt that you owed someone else. The original debtor could use Square to charge your Card or possibly try to get information to charge your account through an ACH payment. I am guessing more along with @Donnie-M ; that this is some kind of Fraud or Phishing attempt.
