Debit Card Surcharges if processed as credit

I'm looking for clarity on surcharging. I know we can pass along surcharges for CREDIT, but not DEBIT. What I'm not clear on is if we are allowed to apply surcharges to DEBIT transactions if they are processed as CREDIT. We use Square Virtual Terminal exclusively, and from what I understand, all virtual transactions are processed as CREDIT even if the customer uses a DEBIT card. Can anyone clarify?

Everything I've seen says no, because according to the rules the credit cards enforce, even if the debit card is tapped and no pin is used, it's treated as a credit card. Very frustrating, I agree. For me, I'm paying about $2,800 per month in processing fees, but only recouping about $700 in surcharges, which implies that about 75% of my customers are tapping/sliding/inserting debit cards.

I've seen online arguments for doing an overall price increase and then offering a cash discount, but the logistics of that are much more difficult.

WHat I'd like to see is Square consider the impact their fee structure has on merchants who have larger volumes of transactions. I do about 300 per day, so the $.15 on each one really adds up, compared to a business that does 10-12 much larger transactions per day.
