Customized Sequentional Invoice Numbers

While I have discovered a thread on how to customize your invoice numbers, I am disappointed to find that this is not a standard option in the Invoice settings section. It would seem that there wouldn't be much required to accommodate this feature. I have also seen that Square was looking into adding this. Is there any information about bringing this idea to fruition?

Thanks, @armoredart.  Ok.  In another thread, I’ve posted a work-around that DOES work.  But for the life of me I can’t find it, probably because I post a lot here! Ha.  Anyway, here’s what I did.

Go to your invoices and send a test invoice to yourself.  Before sending it, change the pre-populated invoice number to whatever you want.  Let’s say you want this year’s invoices to be 2024xxxxx, then you would put in your test invoice 202400000.  Send that invoice to yourself.

Then, create another invoice.  You should see that the next number is now 202400001, the next will be 202400002, etc.  I think this will get you what you want.

One word of warning — don’t get creative!  This work-around will break if you try to make your invoice number alphanumeric.  So, you can not do INV-00001, or even 2024-00001.  Only digits are allowed, currently, so stick with that.

I hope that helps.

Hi @armoredart.  Can you please share a link to that thread you mentioned?  I’d rather not search for it and try to find it, but I suspect I know the one to which you are referring.  If so, I’m not sure that Square needs to do anything else, since the solution I suspect will work can be done with absolutely no software changes on their part.  Let me know, and hopefully we can get you moving without much further delay.

@armoredart PS - don’t forget to cancel your test invoice so it doesn’t mess up your reporting!

Glad we could help here. I’ll mention that there have been recent feature requests submitted to Square to allow more flexibility for those. Not only for invoices but also estimates, contracts and house accounts. Hopefully those receive a favorable review and end up on the future roadmap.
