We are experiencing nearly 50% duplicate customer suggestions, does anybody have an idea why this is happening?
I dare not press merge all button as I am afraid it may mess things up.
When I look at the duplicates I can see no difference in the entries?
Any idea why this is happening?
We are considering using square loyalty but I have a suspicion this may mess things up!!

Hi @Dirky, sorry you're running into this. As @Sam_400º said, this can happen when the customer details are entered with slightly different information. When you click on Duplicate suggestions, you can see all the duplicate profiles and approve them manually or merge them all automatically. This will remove the duplicate profiles but will not affect your transaction details.
You can also check if these are automatically created Instant Profiles. With the Instant Profile option, if your customer’s name is collected from their payment card and a matching profile doesn’t already exist within your directory, Square will create an Instant Profile. Future purchases made with that card will update the customer’s profile with new transaction details and other activity with your business.
Instant Profiles appear in the Instant Profile group in your Directory and can be filtered by using the creation source filter and selecting Instant profile (please see screenshot).

I frequently get duplications, sometimes I can see it's done because of a slightly different way they've put the name or something - other times I've got no idea.
With loyalty they're using their phone number, so that shouldn't cause any issues. If it already recognises them because of emails or card details it will be automatic - but if the system doesn't link what they've put to an existing loyalty then they can tap in their phone number to claim their points.
(loyalty has been working really well for me, but don't think it's live on the register as yet as that was gonna be you next question right?)

I've opted not to upgrade to the Square Register for the time being, instead I purchased the Square Stand, at least that way we can spin it round easily for customers to enter details etc.
