Cash Drawer not recognised

Hi,

I have just installed a Square Register and Terminal at my Theatre. We are a registered Charity.

I do not require a receipt printer so when I needed to install a cash drawer for the bar, I bought a generic RJ11 cabled cash drawer and a RJ11 to USB trigger interface.

When I installed the cash drawer via the interface to the Square Hub, I cannot get the drawer to be seen by the terminal.

From my Register I go to settings/hardware/cash drawers/add and it is not recognised.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, the printer will need to have the rj11 socket. All the mains powered printers on the compatibility chart do.

If you go for the Ethernet printer it will need to connect directly to your router, so couldn’t connect to the network socket of your register. However if you only need the cash draw to work with the register then you could get a USB printer that can plug into the hub & that will work like a dream 👍

search eBay for a printer from the list linked earlier - be aware that some cash draws are designed to work with Epsom or Star, a lot to work with both. It could be worth double checking the spec of the draw you’ve got & get the brand it will work with just to avoid the possibility of any further headaches 👍

That’s not a supported set up - just isn’t going to work. Check out the hardware compatibility right here.

The best way to set up is likely to be picking up a used Ethernet printer from eBay (about £50-60) just to drive the cash draw. This also means that you’ll be able to operate the draw from either the terminal or the register.

USB draws are way overpriced, generic adaptors just don’t work & Stars air adaptor needs a mortgage to buy one!

Thank you for the help.

Does that mean that the printer must have a RJ11 socket as well as an ethernet socket?

I'm guessing I would connect the printer to the Square hub ethernet socket then an RJ11 cable from the printer to the hub and the cash drawer RJ11 into the printer?

I was trying to avoid buying a recommended cash drawer and printer as they are very expensive.

Our Theatre is a registered charity and I have to watch the pennies.

That is why I bought a cheap generic cash drawer expecting it to work with the usb interface plugged into the hub. 😞

I didn't realise it would be an issue.
