Can I connect square terminals to a kitchen printer via Bluetooth without any other hardware?

Just starting out as a new business, we have a small restaurant and only require a basic system that can print a bill for customers and take payments at the table. We are surging a small plates menu so a kitchen printer will make things clearer with lots of dishes on each table but we don’t need a central till system to start out.
As a simple solution to start trading asap could we run two terminals off a hotspot and connect via Bluetooth to a kitchen printer?
thanks,

Jay

Hey @JayLiddicoat! Thanks for your post and welcome to the Seller Community! I can see that this is your first post with us, congrats!

At the moment, the Square Terminal does not support a Bluetooth connection. Although, you can connect the Terminal to a kitchen printer through either a USB or Ethernet connection. We recommend looking through our compatibility page on our website to check which models of kitchen printers are compatible with the Terminal.

You can, however, set up your terminal so that it prints order tickets as well as customer receipts. To configure your printer settings:

  1. From the navigation bar at the bottom of your screen, tap ≡More.
  2. Tap Settings > Hardware > Printer.
  3. Toggle on Receipts, In-person tickets, Online order tickets, Order ticket stubs and/or Void tickets.
  4. To set up automatic printing, which will automatically print from the built-in printer:
    • For Online order tickets, toggle on Automatically print new orders.
    • For Receipts, tap Print receipts > select “Automatically”.
  5. To test your printer connection, tap Test Print.

With regards to running the Terminal off a hotspot connection, that is also possible. You can also use Offline Mode to take payments without the need for an internet connection. Make sure to read up on the best practices for using offline mode on your Terminal to learn more!

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need anything else! Happy to help. 😊

Thanks.

Can I just check that I have understood this correctly, if an ‘order’ is entered into the terminal we can print a copy of the order before the final bill is printed for the customer?

If this is correct, can you print multiple orders and keep the tab running for the customer to get a final bill with several ‘orders’ printed from the terminal?

Hey @JayLiddicoat - terminal user here....

The inbuilt printer on the terminal can act just like any other printer station, so if you're running a tab then it'll print each new part of the tab when they put the order in.

The terminal will print any receipts and tickets at the end of the sale with it asking to confirm that the unit's been handed back to you before it prints.

Will I need Restaurant Plus to use these functions?

Square

All of this functionality is available with the free version of Square for Restaurants @JayLiddicoat

If you would like to see a list of features included in each, you can review both Pricing Plans here.
