Brecknell scale not working when item is scanned in

I just purchased the Brecknell 6710U digital scale directly from the Square store for my Square Register using Square for Retail.

 

When I manually search and select an item by pressing the item title (not the weigh button on the far right), the weight of the item is automatically recognized after placing it on the scale. But when I scan that same item via barcode or press the weigh button on the far right after item search, the weighing dialog box comes up and nothing happens when I place the item on the scale.

 

Am I wrong in thinking the scale should work in all circumstances?
