how do you autmatically apply a discount to an entire ticket
There isn't a way to automatically apply a discount to a whole transaction, but you can set up automatic discounts to specific items or to a specific timeframe.

Square now supports automatic discounts. You set these up the same way you set up any other discounts, but you enable the "Auto Apply to Categories and Items" section of the discount.
Choose what categories and/or items you want automatically discounted and for what time/day/period you would like the discount enabled. Once you save this discount, the Point of Sale handles the rest seamlessly.
More info can be found on the Create and Manage Discounts help page.
If you don't see the Auto Apply section in your discount screen, contact customer service. This is a pretty new feature that may not be enabled on your account yet but can be if you reach out.
Is this a joke? Is there really no way to simply add a 5 or 10% discount to an entire order such as a military discount???? Such a standard practice. I am about to give square back... nearly useless for actual retail.
@AdamAAS There are definitely ways to manually add discounts to the entire ticket. For the regular Point of Sale app it’s just the matter of tapping the Add Discount line in the “tape” on the right side of the screen. This will add whatever discount you select to the whole ticket. Retail and Restaurants apps have this capability too, but I’m not as familiar with the screen layouts.
This conversation was about automatically adding discounts for time periods, and in the last four years since this was first posted there have been significant upgrades to the auto discount capabilities.
