creating a sub modifier for a current modifier

Hi. I have a set of modifiers, but I wanted to see if I could create a set of sub-modifiers within those modifiers.

In my case, I sell bubble waffles and pancakes. Right now, it's set up so a customer can choose pancakes, and they have signature flavors as a modifier. However, those flavors have items in them. Can I create a sub to each modifier? For example, if they choose 15 pancakes, the modifier is Oreo special, but they want to be able to choose if they don't want white chocolate. Is that possible?

I guess I'm trying to avoid it being 10 different menu items and just a sub-modifier for the main modifier. I'm not even sure my question makes sense. Thanks.

Hello @EricaQ !

Your question makes perfect sense. Unfortunately, submodifiers aren't something that Square has at the moment.

The only way I've found around this with the standard point of sale is to create an optional modifier group with all the No's and Sub's that you can think of. For online ordering, you'll run the risk of someone trying to order something that isn't correct, but it's about the best you can do at the moment.

In Square for Restaurants, you can set up Conversational Modifiers though. Here's a help article to help you configure it. Unfortunately, conversational modifiers are only available for in person ordering. For online ordering, you're still going to have to do the optional modifier group like I mentioned above.

I highly recommend heading over to the Ideate section of this community and submitting this feature request. Feature requests are weighted by how many sellers request it, so the more sellers that ask for sub-mods, the better the chance of it happening!

I've been asking for Sub Modifier for over a Year Now... somehow, it's as if square has not really focused on the Restaurant side of the POS System because every other POS I've used has this basic feature set.

This is something I have asked every account manager we have had (until our current one) since we started on Square for Restaurants 3 years ago. The ability nest multiple levels of menu items/modifier options would be a game changer for Square for Restaurants and would be in line with several other POS systems (such as Aloha), where you can continue to drill down multiple levels. A great example for us, as a cafe, is the ability to “Build Your Own” breakfast. Right now, we have ever single A La Carte option listed separately based on the individual modifies. So if someone wants “Two Eggs” we have “Two Scrambled,” “Two Over Easy,” “Two Poached,” etc., but if someone only wants “One Egg” we then have “One Scrambled,” “One Over Easy,” “One Poached,” etc.

Ideally, the Build Your Own would have the Modifier “One Egg” and then the ability to nest a modifier of the Egg Type, another Modifier of “Two Eggs” with the same Egg Type nested modifier. Another option, if the nested modifier isn’t possible, would be to nest Menu Items, where we could keep our “A La Carte” menu items, but also have a “Build Your Own” that allows you to select the applicable menu items which already have the set modifiers to them.

This adjustment streamlines the guest experience, the user end from the front of house and the kitchen’s plating ability by having all items associated with one top level menu item combined into one item (and assigned to one seat for those locations that focus on Seat positions).
