Why are customers now able to select out of stock items?

In the past customers would not have been able to add out of stock items to cart as the variation would be grayed out or there would be a line through it.

I was told by a support assistant that this “change” is as a result of changes to the checkout process by the square engineering team and not a glitch but rather the new default.

How does this possibly make sense? Our goal is to make the online ordering process seamless, to put myself in the customers shoes it would be incredibly frustrating to add multiple items to cart to only find that they're not available when I'm about to check out.

Thanks for waiting! I was able to get a bit more insight. Our team confirmed that this is working as expected right now and can’t be changed at the moment. That said, our engineering team knows this is causing some friction and is looking at ways to improve the platform and the overall experience, so hopefully it will be addressed in the future.

I really appreciate you reaching out and sharing your feedback. If you need anything else, just let me know — I’m happy to help!

Hello @Likklepattyshop , thanks for posting! I agree with you, it really does not make sense that customers can add out of stock items. Support is correct that this is currently working as expected, but I am double checking with our Online Team and also seeing if there are any possible workarounds.

I will keep you updated as soon as I hear back. I appreciate your patience.
