Tracking Stock of weighted items using barcodes and other questions.

So I have recently started playing with the retail app to try make it easier to handle our weighted products.

We sell at farmers markets so we preweigh and price our meat packages. First time venturing into barcodes so had a couple questions:

1. Is it possible to use the barcodes to also keep track of number of items. When I scan the barcode for the sale it comes up properly with price. But when I go to inventory count, it reads the whole barcode and says item not found. Would also be nice to know that I should have 10 packages of ground beef on hand of varying weights.

2. My scale can embed price or weight. Is there any way to change it so that square reads the weight information and not the price. Sometimes we might lower or raise prices day by day depending on where our market is. Would be nice to scan in and have the weight be accurate but have the price changed.

Hi @MuskokaPrairie,

Agency partner of Square here. From my understanding:

  1. Yes, it is possible to checkout items using barcode scanning and keep track of the inventory throughout the process. I am not sure why the item does not show up when you scan the barcode on the item. The only reason I can think of is that the barcode you entered in the Edit Item page is not matching with the barcode physically on the item, so please double check on that.

You get to set a rate(CAD$/lb) for this kind of weighted item. The checkout steps would be:
    - Assuming you have 10 items in stock initially
    - Scan the barcode on the item into Square POS
    - Now the POS should prompt you to enter the quantity (i.e. lbs)
    - Weigh your item (i.e. lbs)
    - Enter your item weight into the POS
    - Assuming your item weighs about 2 pounds, and the price rate you set for this item is CAD$5/lb
    - Therefore, the POS would calculate the price to be CAD$10 for this transaction
    - After the transaction completes, the inventory count would decreases by 1, coming to 9 items in stock

  2. Yes, the POS would prompt you for the weight information as mentioned above. I am guessing you currently have the items configured with Per Item as the unit. Configuring the unit field can fix your problem. As for different price rate at different market/location, you can set the item to be available at multiple locations, and then add different Add price override(the blue button right below the Price field) for each of your markets/locations.

Hope this helps!

Jerry
