I'm trying to set up self-serving QR ordering for dine-in and I want the option to have the customers order first, then pay after they are finished with the meal. I see there used to be the open tabs option which was exactly what I needed, but it is no longer available. Why? What options do I have now?
Hello @LeonL 👋 Thank you for reaching out to the Square Community.
I can check in with our product team, but I don't believe there's a way to keep orders open via QR Code. You can still utilize the Open Tickets feature, but I'm not sure this can be used in combination with QR Code ordering. You can also use Square Kiosk for self-serve ordering, but this flow also requires payment from the customer before they can submit their order.
I'll let you know what I find out!
Hi @_Violet! Happy to talk with you again.
Please encourage the product team to reconsider the open tabs option! Or at least have it enabled on my Square account! It is a bottleneck to have customers manually enter their credit card payment information on the spot just to place their order. I wanted to eliminate manually-entered credit card information payment entirely and move all dine-in checkout to chip inserts/NFC taps using Square Handheld or Square Kiosks at every station for better efficiency and security. I also want to give customers the option to order service requests such as drink refills, to-go containers, or more food through their open check for a true contactless experience.
Thanks,
Leon L
I take back what I said. I didn't know what I was talking about at the time. We have fully adopted to QR ordering and not having pay later works completely fine. Customers pay before delivery of meal. You can hide certain items from types of fullfilment and channels, and have the items assigned to only be available for self-serve QR ordering. We have water as a free item showing only on the self-serve ordering. Our servers now don't need to manually place dine-in customer's drinks and orders. We can see from our KDS screens what drinks which tables have placed. Most of the front-end crew have now distributed into the back-end because of self-serve. I have attached NFC tags underneath the QR code stickers that let users put their phone nearby to just tap open the menu for better UI-UX onboarding process. We've enrolled into the loyalty program and marketing. We'll soon enable customer profile for repeating orders. Each time a dine-in customer open the QR menu, it drives traffic to the website and helps with the SEO, placing the restaurant menu on the front page of google search within the recent opening of 2 months. Great job! Square team!
