Scanning items with multiple Units changed for the worse

Our business uses the Square Register. We have a lot of items with multiple units for different pack sizes that have different prices. In our context these are mostly beer (single, 4pk, 6pk, etc.) I have the UPC barcodes in the GTIN section of the most purchased unit pack size. This is usually a 4pk or 6pk. We offer everything as singles as well. After the update to 6.43 today, when I scan a beer the quantity menu automatically pops up for the unit it's attached to. If I want to sell a single, I have to enter the quantity of the unit the barcode is attached to (usually a 4pk or a 6pk) and then click on the item in the cart to change it to the single unit. Before the update, it would just pop up the side menu and I would be able to change the unit with fewer button presses and menus to navigate. It would be rad if the system could be a little more streamlined and faster to use from a user interface point of view.

A way this could be done is to have a UPC scan have a built in quantity of 1 on units that aren't the default per item unit. That way when I scan a UPC attached to a unit that's not the per item default single unit, it will automatically add one of that unit to the cart. That way if I need to change it to a single, I can just click on the 4pk in the cart and change it. This would eliminate one menu and two button presses. A few seconds per transaction add up of the course of the day when you're doing hundreds of them.

Just found a huge problem with the new system. I can't scan a UPC connected to a non-default unit and change it to another non-default unit. Like I was talking about above, we have different pack sizes that we made custom units for. More often than not I want it to scan as a 6pk but if somebody gets two 6pks, we have a separate 12pk price with a different unit. I can't scan the 6pk barcode and switch the unit to the 12pk unit. The button where I would put in the quantity changes to remove.

Thanks for posting, @ndixon

I'm not super familiar with the function you are describing, so I'm going to reach out to the Square for Retail team to see if they can shed some light on this update for us.

I'll post back here once I have some information to share. Thanks again for bringing this up, and for your continued patience.

@ndixon ;

I have asked for this for awhile since they came out with 'Sell by units'I sell candles similar to you selling packs of beer.  I sell Taper Candles by singular, a dozen or by the case (for weddings etc).  I have my sell by as:

  1. - 1 Candle as $2.49     SKU xxx123
  2.  - 1 Dozen as $25.99 - $2.19 each SKU sss456
  3.  - 1 case as $288 -144 at $2 each  SKU kkk987

Each Quantity also has its unique Barcode or SKU. So why when I scan SKU sss456 does Square not enter 1 for the Quantuty but asks me How many?  I am Retail like you its not like someone is going to walk to your counter and bring up a 12 pack of beer and be like I want a Quantuty of 0 - 12 packs to purchase.  Why can Square not off the ability to Scan a Unique Barcode or SKU and put in a Quantity of 1 that we can therefore change 20 the Quantity they bring to the counter if more than 1.    I use the example of Walmart and Toilet Paper at a self Checkout.  Why if I bring one roll of TP to the self checkout, I scan it it shows 1, Same as Square.   But if I bring up a Family pack of TP with 24 rolls in it Walmart scans said Barcode and sets the quantity to 1 with a Price that is pre-configured in their system.  Not Square, You scan a pack of TP 24-rolls and then Square asks How many and the Default is 0.  So you are telling me a RETAIL customer walked to my register with a Family pack of TP, a 12 pack of beer, or a Box of candles and wants to buy None of them since Square defaults to ZERO.

Please make this make Sense to me!!!

If the OP scans 1 6pk they would see 1 six pack being rung up just like all other items in Square with a SKU or GTIN barcode, not the 0 and have to type in 1 Six Pack.  We sit hours creating Sell by Units to keep track of our inventory, to find out we waste time entering 1 for the quantitities.  If a customer brings up 12 Six Packs or 2 dozen Tapers it is faster for US as Squares Customers scanning the 2 barcodes and stay in the rythem then to stop and look at Squares POS because a Pop up is asking How Many?  If the OP wanted to change from 1 6 pack to two 6 pack OR 1- 12 Pack of Beer, we could Delete the wrong Item by swipping and scan the Correct Barcode / SKU without continually looking at the POS Screen to see if the correct Quantity is being calculated for the Barcode / SKU that was Scanned.

Here is a Link to my Ideate form 3-2023 :  Up-date-the-Quantity-for-Sell-By-Units-when-Scanning-more-than-1

Not sure where the Video went that showed this issue in the Ideate but here it is again.

I know this video is from 2-2023 but as of Square version 6.43.1 this is still an issue and now as @ndixon  pointed out so is the issue of changing quantities from a 6pk to a 12 pack.  I do understand @BernadetteA , you may not know of all the Features square offers and needs this brought to the correct team but this has been an issue since this Sell By Units first came out and has been brought up to the Retail Team according to the Ideate above as of a reply on 4-26-2023 by @Harsh-SqProduct.  Currrently it is 5-22-2024 when I bring this up again.

I do agree with ndixon that it should be easier to change from 1 pack to 1 -12 pack to save the end user $ especially with the current state of the US economy and Inflation, end users are trying to save every cent they can.

Yep this is it. Why can't every unit type work the same way. The only one that works this way is the default single unit. It would be great if it would automatically just add one of the unit the barcode is attached to to the cart.
